Summer Safety Tips for Dogs

Summer is one of the best times of year for outdoor adventures, beach trips, walks, and time spent with pets. However, warmer temperatures can also create safety concerns for dogs if precautions are not taken.

One of the most important summer safety tips for dogs is making sure they always have access to fresh water and shade. Dogs can overheat quickly, especially during long walks, outdoor play sessions, or hot afternoons.

Hot pavement is another major concern during the summer months. Asphalt and concrete surfaces can become extremely hot and may burn a dog’s paw pads. A simple way to test pavement temperature is by placing the back of your hand on the ground for several seconds. If it feels too hot for your hand, it is too hot for your dog.

Avoid walking dogs during the hottest parts of the day whenever possible. Early morning and evening walks are often safer and more comfortable during warmer months.

Travel water bowls, cooling products, enrichment toys, and frozen treats can all help dogs stay comfortable and engaged throughout the summer season. Many dogs also enjoy splash pads, kiddie pools, and supervised water play during hot weather.

It is also important to never leave dogs unattended inside vehicles, even for short periods of time. Temperatures inside cars can rise rapidly and become dangerous within minutes.

Summer is also a great time to focus on enrichment activities indoors during extremely hot days. Puzzle toys, hide-and-seek toys, and slow feeders help provide mental stimulation while keeping dogs cool indoors.
